The first task was to create a gracious entry experience that incorporated coat closets and distracted from the kitchen.  This was achieved by creating a new focal point through emphasis on a concrete column that was situated near the entry.  A yellow rope was wrapped around the column’s base, and a contrast was created between the raw concrete of the upper column and the refined white walls and light beams of the living room.  The careful juxtaposition of austere and warm materials, of strategic backlighting and wall reveals, gave the spaces volumetric definition and visual playfulness.
